Must-Watch Trucking Technology Trends for 2022

Michael Morales  -  May 19, 2021  -

With the world revolutionizing itself with technology, it’s only expected the fleet and trucking industry joins the flow of innovation to increase its efficiency. According to the American Trucking Association, 72% of the nation’s freight is moved via truck fleets. The trucking industry is playing a vital role in keeping the economy afloat.

Unfortunately, harsh market conditions of the past year have caused many trucking fleets to go under. To reverse the damage, trucking industries will need to quickly incorporate new technological trends for a profitable 2022.

Trucking trends have always been evolving, but now more than ever due to the obstacles posed by the pandemic. With the freight market looking to make a full recovery this year, what technology trends could help them along?

So let’s get some insight into the trucking world. We’ve put together the trucking industry trends to look out for in 2022.

Digitalizing Trucking

With all things IoT, the world is digitalizing, so why not the trucking industry? It could change the way fleets operate entirely, streamlining them and eliminating the hassle by going paperless.

It could include;

  1. Autonomous Driving

The idea of self-driving trucks would have appeared implausible a few years back. now, however, with self-driving cars already on the market, it doesn’t seem like too far of a stretch. With Tech giants like Telsa taking on trucking innovations, it is only a matter of time before AI and automation are integrated into the trucking industry.

  1. Real-Time Vehicle Stats

Why let your truck surprise you with a sudden breakdown in the middle of nowhere? Engine reports, tire pressure, fuel, and oil levels and battery health can all be set to report real-time stats to the driver as well as the company itself.

  1.  Anti-theft GPS

With the e-commerce industry reaching an all-time high in recent years. Keeping track of their consignments is a priority for logistic companies and integrated GPS would allow them to keep real-time track of their fleets.

  1. Cloud-based Computing

For operations, schedules and management a cloud-based system could provide great organization and efficiency. An automated system generating reports and updates would also facilitate commercial semi-truck insurance processes.

  1. Blockchain technology

It would streamline and manage commercial trucking fleets and their operations, providing great convenience to all trucking players. Blockchain allows the exchange of data, information and contracts which is accessible to view for all the clients but can’t be tampered with. This ensures transparency while also securely storing the information.

To sum it up, for getting in line with the data-driven world, trucking companies would definitely be putting smart technology and digital trucking trends on the list for 2022.

A Rise in Trucking Liability Insurance

Despite the hardships of the past year, new players are emerging every day in the trucking business. With increased traffic and the number of accidents reported on the rise, any trucking business must cover their accidental losses with commercial truck Insurance.

According to FMCSA, 70% of truck accidents report vehicle damage and 130,000 people are injured each year in truck-related accidents.

As the technological trends take on, the stakes are raised even higher. With the integration of new technologies in trucking fleets, insurance coverage is all the more crucial and will definitely witness a rise.

Electric Trucks

Although not as easy to implement as electric cars and delivery vans, electric trucks are already in the creation process. Tech giants such as Tesla and Nikola, among others, who are manufacturing automated vehicles are now making progress towards electric trucks.

Going green and saving fuel trends, moved along by new policy approaches, have already put more than 2.1 million electric vehicles on the road, around the world.

The trucking industry will be the next to join the flow. It would work well for short-distance deliveries. Popular delivery services like FedEx and Amazon are already on the road to acquiring electric trucks.

Although it’s hard to determine exactly when the technological trends will gain widespread adoption into the trucking industry, they will surely be on the list of trends to watch out for in 2022. It would be interesting to see how these trucking trends will affect commercial truck insurance in 2022.

Which transformational trucking trend do you think we will witness this year? Which 2022 trucking trend would you adopt for your commercial fleet?
